"If you want a useful tool, don't buy this!" 2007-11-28
By Robert E. Bower (SHAWANO, WI USA)
Cordless drills need to meet three criteria to be worth buying. Have adequate torque to drive screws, a battery that holds a charge under modest use and two batteries to facilitate continuous use. The SKIL 2567 has none of these. I bought this drill to replace a 14.4 B&D, which performed well (re: the above three conditions) but B&D discontinued manufacturing both the batteries and the chargers, both of which went bad.

The SKIL 2567 has very limited torque or driving and drilling power. Only twist drills of less than 1/4" can be used with reasonable effectiveness. Spade bits take forever to drill trough a 2" board, if the drill doesn't peter out first. The battery retains its charge through only the lightest job and since only one comes with the drill kit, you are SOL for finishing the job. Further, the battery doesn't retain its charge for very long while the drill is dormant. A full charge will dissipate almost completely in about three weeks, so the idea of grabbing your drill for a quick job is not possible.

My SKIL 2567 came with an attached STUD FINDER, which is even more hilariously useless than the drill. It is powered by one of those expensive, small round batteries you normally find in cameras, etc. I installed the battery when I purchased the drill and it was totally dead by the next time I picked up the drill. For a few dollars more than the cost of a new battery you can buy a stud detector that runs on AA batteries.

SKIL made their name on handheld circular saws. I have had one for years. But I, for one, will not purchase any cordless tools with the SKILL name on them.

"Warning about charging batteries for this tool" 2007-08-06
By Ronald L. Crafton
I own one of these tools that came in a three-piece package deal and really like it. The problem is that Skil designed the battery charger for this tool without an automatic shut off and that is why I rated this tool as a 3. The result is that I now own a cordless drill, a cordless flashlight and a cordless circular saw that I can no longer use until I spend almost as much money as I spent when I purchased this package originally for replacement batteries because the charger would not shut off and overcharged the batteries, resulting in premature death of the batteries. If you are disciplined enough to take the charger off after three hours of charging then I would recommend this tool 100%. If not, then I would recommend that you buy an electric timer to turn the charger off after three hours. In that case, I would also recommend this tool 100%.

"They just got it wrong" 2006-07-21
By D. Sutter (Milton, MA)
First, let me state that I did not buy this drill. I bought an older Skil model, which I liked. Skil sent me this one after the one I bought was recalled. I have now had this one for a couple of years and use it once a week or so.

The biggest problem with this drill is the shape of the thing. Look at other drills. The chuck, and hence the bit, stick straight forward from the body. Some tilt up a little, some don't, but you can see way the thing points by just looking at the drill. When using them, you sight down the drill and there you go! There is no guessing required.

This model from Skil was designed in a different way, perhaps by someone who never used a drill before. The motor housing tilts up a little, just like many others. No problem. But then the chuck tilts up much further, not in line with the rest of the housing, and not in line with the lines and contours molded into the plastic. It simply does not make sense! It requires constant reassessment to make sure you're driving a drill bit or screwdriver bit straight.

The trickle charger sits on the battery pack, rather than the other way around. I does not stop charging by itself so you have to remember to come back and unplug it.

The drill will (barely) balance on a flat surface. Not only does the housing tilt up, the grip tilts forward. Maybe they did it this way so it would look fast or streamlined or something. Anyway, it's off balance as a result. If you don't set it down gently it will tip over.

The chuck doesn't grip bits well. I get a bit slippage way too often no matter how tightly I attempt to tighten the chuck.

I hated the drill from the day it arrived. Why I didn't replace it before now is a mystery. Maybe because it was free, I guess. The batteries have recently been failing to keep a charge and the charger itself finally died.

By the way, I just bought a 12V Dewalt drill for twice the price and consider it money well spent.
